Abstract Two new outer bounds for the two-receiver broadcast channel are presented, both of which strictly improve on the current best known bound. The key idea is to employ an auxiliary receiver as a mathematical tool to write the bounds. This idea is then applied to obtain bounds for the relay and interference channels as well, which also improve on the current best-known bounds for some situations.
