ISIT 2020 Student Video Exposition

The International Symposium on Information Theory has always been a unique opportunity to connect with students who share similar interests. Also this year, we have tried to keep this social component alive. The Student and Outreach Subcommittee is proud to present the “ISIT 2020 Student Video Exposition”, a special online challenge, where students registered to ISIT will be able to:

  • Team up with students from other universities. The total number of teams will be limited to 20. Each team will be formed by 5 students. Students are free to create their own team, but do not worry if you cannot make it: the Student and Outreach Subcommittee will be happy to assist you in this!
  • Explain an ‘easy’ concept related to information theory to a high-school student. Each team can select one among the four following themes:
    • Shannon’s Channel Coding Theorem;
    • Shannon’s Source Coding Theorem;
    • Asymptotic Equipartition Property (AEP);
    • Rate-Distortion Theorem.
  • Record and upload a short video (<4min) at this link no later than Monday, June 15th. For preparing your video, please make sure to follow the same guidelines specified for authors.
  • Win fun prizes! Three videos will be selected by a jury composed by the well-known in the IT community Brit Cruise, who works on educational learning and has helped us create a number of successful YouTube outreach videos (Video 1, Video 2), as well as one high-school and one undergraduate student. Each member of these teams will win $300 (possibility to choose between a check or an Amazon gift card).
  • Get visibility within the IT and high-school communities. The three winning videos will be uploaded on the IEEE Information Theory Society YouTube Channel and distributed across high schools.

Students should register no later than Friday, May 29th by filling this form.

Organized by the Student and Outreach Subcommittee (Martina Cardone, Christina Fragouli, Farhad Shirani, I-Hsiang Wang, Patrick Schulte, Parisa Hassanzadeh)
